  22. Thank you for using Quick Restart 2.7. This document briefly outlines the
  23. necessities and important notes about Quick Restart 2.7. I urge you to
  24. read through the text so that you can become familiar with the program and
  25. its operation.

  28. What is Quick Restart 2.7?
  29. Quick Restart 2.7 is a small program that displays a button bar on your
  30. desktop, allowing you to Restart, Shutdown, Powerdown, Logoff and
  31. Close Applications all with just one click. The idea is that now you
  32. won't have to click on:
  33. Start - Shut Down. - Restart the Computer? - Yes (4 clicks)
  34. when you only have to click once to accomplish the same task.

  36. Configuration options are included so that Quick Restart 2.7 can be tailored
  37. to your needs and can provide a better service.

  41. Changes from Quick Restart 1.0 include:

  43. -Better memory management.
  44. -Less memory usage as a result.
  45. -INI file no longer resides in Windows directory.
  46. -Improved Interface.
  47. -Improved code providing more stability.
  48. -A Power Off feature has been added for computers that support automatic
  49.  power off.
  50. -The Quick Restart Button Bar can now be set to stay on top of other windows.

  53. Changes from Quick Restart 2.0
  54. Changes from Quick Restart 2.0 include:

  56. -Logoff bug fixed (Extra instance of program is not created).
  57. -Button Bar no longer obstructs window hot-spots when staying on top of 
  58.  other windows.
  59. -A new option has been added for removing the title bar.
  60. -Tool Tips have been added to the buttons.

  63. Changes from Quick Restart 2.4
  64. New improvements include:
  65.  
  66. -Tool Tips can be turned ON and OFF as an option.
  67. -A System Tray icon replaces the Task Bar button.
  68. -The blue Title Bar is 256 colours and not 24-bit True Colour as in 
  69.  version 2.4 (This caused display problems on computers set to anything 
  70.  less than 24-bit True Colour).

  73. Changes from Quick Restart 2.6
  74. A few annoying bugs were eliminated in this latest version:
  75.  
  76. -When Windows Restarts automatically due to a change in configuration or
  77.  a newly installed program, Quick Restart 2.6 would sometimes give an error
  78.  message stating that the System Tray Icon could not be removed. This has
  79.  been fixed.
  80. -Quick Restart is not compatible with WindowsNT or the Win32s environment.
  81.  Version 2.6 would crash or cause other errors on these platforms.
  82.  Quick Restart 2.7 now displays an error message and then exits when run
  83.  on WindowsNT or Win32s, instead of running and then crashing.
  84. -Memory usage has been improved and as a result even less memory is needed
  85.  to run Quick Restart.
  86. -Less CPU resources are needed when running due to a change in coding.

  89. System Requirements
  90. The following specifications are a recommended guideline for optimal
  91. performance:
  92.  
  93.     OS:        Windows 95 (OSR1 or OSR2)
  94.         Processor:      Intel Pentium 60 or higher.
  95.     RAM:        1 Mb
  96.     HDD Space:    500Kb
  97.         Display:        256 Color or higher.
  98.  
  99. The reason I advise an Intel Pentium processor is that Quick Restart 2.7
  100. has been optimized for the Pentium Processor family.
  101. Running Quick Restart 2.7 on a 486 or less may result in the program
  102. running slowly.

  105. Win32s and Windows NT
  106. -Quick Restart 2.7 is not compatible with Win32s.
  107.  The Restart, Shutdown, Powerdown, Logoff and Close functions used in
  108.  Quick Restart 2.7 are not supported in the Win32s environment.

  110. -Quick Restart 2.7 was not designed for or tested with Windows NT. 
  111.  Quick Restart 2.7 will not function under Windows NT.

  114. Things you should know
  115. Quick Restart 2.7 uses VERY little resources and practically no processor
  116. power while idle. It has been tested with other software running such as
  117. games, compilers, word processors and there has been no noticeable decline
  118. in performance or interference.
  119.  
  120. Once Quick Restart 2.7 has started, its window cannot be moved. This feature
  121. has been omitted so that Quick Restart 2.7 visually integrates better with
  122. the desktop. The bar can, however be moved by adjusting the configuration.

  124. The Emergency Shutdown button closes all applications without notifying
  125. them first. This means that the applications in question will close without
  126. allowing you to save any unsaved data. As a result any unsaved work will be
  127. lost. I included this feature for emergencies only. Use it sparingly.

  129. I did not put in a feature for restarting Windows (do not get this confused
  130. with restarting the computer) because it is better to reboot the computer
  131. and clear the memory rather than merely restarting Windows. Programs which
  132. require you to restart Windows after a new configuration will (or should)
  133. have this feature in place.

  135. There is no button for restarting in MS-DOS Mode due to the fact that 
  136. software designed specifically for this operating system is virtually extinct 
  137. and I am trying to promote a move to the Windows 95 operating environment.

  140. Using Quick Restart 2.7
  141. Using Quick Restart 2.7 is pretty straight forward. The Button Bar
  142. automatically starts up when Windows starts. The buttons are labeled
  143. as follows (in order from left to right):
  144.  
  145. Restart:         Reboots the computer.
  146. Shutdown:        Closes Windows and allows user to turn the computer off
  147.                  safely.
  148. Powerdown:       Closes Windows and automatically turns computer power off.
  149.                  (Hardware support required)
  150. Logoff:          Logs the current user off and allows another one to log on.
  151. Emergency Close: Forcefully closes ALL running programs but retains Explorer. 
  152.                  A new user Logon may be initiated.
  153.  
  154. The five main Quick Restart buttons may be configured with the following 
  155. options:
  156.  
  157. Ask for confirmation before performing task. This option will cause
  158. Quick Restart 2.7 to display a message box asking for your approval before
  159. attempting to perform any of the shutdown or restart tasks.
  160.  
  161. Do not display warning for Emergency Close. As a precaution,
  162. Quick Restart 2.7 will display a warning when the user clicks on the
  163.  
  164. Emergency Close button and will ask for confirmation. You can choose to
  165. disable this warning by selecting the check box.
  166.  
  167. Enabled Auto Power Off feature. This will display the Automatic Power Off
  168. button in the bar. Deselecting this check box will remove the button.
